Rwomushana, Musumba, Ssemujju Allegedly Linked to Besigye Treason Plot

Political analyst Charles Rwomushana, Salaamu Musumba, and Ibrahim Ssemujju are reportedly implicated in a treason case involving opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye. The State’s summary of evidence, which has not yet been tested in court, alleges that these individuals attended a meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

During this meeting, discussions allegedly revolved around a plot to overthrow the Ugandan government by force. The prosecution claims that an American security company owner, identified as AW, was introduced to Salaamu Musumba in 2023. It is further alleged that Musumba requested training in covert communication and intelligence gathering from AW, ostensibly for spying on the government.

The State asserts that a Zoom meeting where these requests were made was recorded and will be used as evidence. Following this, Musumba allegedly invited AW to Brussels for a meeting that included Charles Rwomushana, former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, and former Kira Municipality MP Ssemujju.

According to the prosecution, AW agreed to serve as the group’s security and military advisor. The State also claims that Musumba later facilitated contact between AW and an individual identified as KB, believed to be Dr. Kizza Besigye. AW and KB allegedly held online and later physical meetings in Geneva to discuss the plot.

The legal implications for Rwomushana, Musumba, and Ssemujju remain unclear, but with the detention of Erias Lukwago and Ssemujju’s reported apprehension about returning to Uganda, the possibility of arrests looms. The seizure of evidence from the People’s Front for Freedom party offices further suggests an escalating investigation. It is important to note that these allegations have not been proven in court, and all individuals named are presumed innocent.
