Police in Luwero have arrested two female medical staff from Luwero Hospital on charges of extortion. The accused, identified as orthopaedic officer Rebecca Nakiwala and Margaret Nabikolo, were taken into custody following a complaint from the family of a woman admitted to the hospital on July 14.

The victim reportedly sustained a severe leg injury and was allegedly denied treatment in the emergency ward due to her inability to pay for services. According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, the suspects are accused of demanding Shs 700,000 from the patient’s brother on July 15 before proceeding with medical care.

The family managed to gather Shs 300,000, which was handed over to the hospital staff. Immediately after receiving the money, police, who were reportedly conducting an undercover operation, apprehended the two workers. The recovered Shs 300,000 was seized as evidence.

The arrested individuals are currently detained at Luwero Central Police Station as investigations into the alleged extortion continue. This incident follows a pattern of similar allegations at Luwero General Hospital, despite recent government efforts to improve healthcare worker remuneration. Previously, a medical intern was arrested in August 2025 for similar extortion claims, and in 2024, two interns were dismissed over related accusations.
