Kambuga Hospital Renovation Sees New Theatre and Staff Housing Commissioned

Kambuga General Hospital in Kanungu District has taken a significant stride forward in its comprehensive upgrade project. The recent commissioning of a modern operating theatre and a 16-unit staff housing complex, both constructed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade, signifies the successful completion of the project’s initial phase.

This Shs43 billion government-funded initiative aims to transform the hospital into a regional referral facility. The first phase, which included the new theatre and housing, saw an allocation of Shs9.7 billion, with Shs4.2 billion received by the district to date. A portion of this was used for the theatre and quarters, with Shs800 million set aside for a new maternity ward.

The 16 self-contained staff units are designed to house healthcare workers directly on the hospital premises. This is expected to improve emergency response times, reduce absenteeism, and generally enhance the quality of service delivery to the communities served by the hospital, which includes Kanungu, Rukungiri, Rukiga, and parts of the DRC.

Officials expressed satisfaction with the quality of the newly handed-over facilities. The new operating theatre is particularly noted as a crucial improvement, addressing the previous inadequacy of space and enabling surgical teams to perform life-saving operations more efficiently. The comprehensive upgrade, which began with a groundbreaking in March 2023, is slated to eventually provide specialized healthcare services across the Kigezi Sub-region once fully completed.

Kambuga General Hospital, originally established in 1965, will benefit from improved surgical and maternal care, alongside enhanced staff welfare, upon the project’s finalization.
