The Ugandan government has demonstrated its commitment to the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon by presenting a symbolic Shs3.7 billion dummy cheque. This pledge, set to span four years, underscores the nation’s dedication to fostering sports tourism and enhancing Uganda’s global sporting profile.
State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, presented the cheque, emphasizing that the investment extends beyond the race itself. “This investment is about more than a race, it is about growing sports tourism, creating opportunities for our athletes, stimulating local businesses and showcasing Uganda to the world,” Ogwang stated during a press conference in Kampala.
The Ministry of Health has also given the marathon a clean bill of health, assuring the public that the event will proceed as planned on August 22, 2026, in Kasese. Ministry spokesperson Emmanuel Ainebyoona confirmed that with the discharge of the last Ebola patient, the nation’s health systems are prepared, and participants can attend safely while observing standard health measures.
This year’s marathon holds particular significance as it recently achieved World Athletics Label Road Race status, a testament to its growing international standards. Organizers anticipate a record-breaking event with an estimated 8,000 participants from over 20 countries, highlighting its emergence as a premier destination race in Africa.
Stakeholders, including Tusker Lite Brand Manager Sandra Againe and Uganda Tourism Board Vice Chairperson Ron Kawamara, expressed enthusiasm for the continued partnership and the marathon’s role in showcasing Uganda’s natural beauty and promoting tourism. The National Council of Sports also commended the event for its high organizational standards and contribution to the country’s sports development.
