Volunteer firefighter under investigation for devastating France forest fire

Authorities in France have placed an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter under formal investigation on suspicion of starting a significant forest fire south of Paris.

The blaze, which occurred in the renowned Fontainebleau forest, burned more than 2,000 hectares (approximately 5,000 acres) and necessitated the evacuation of around 1,000 people.

Prosecutor Diane Ngomsik stated that the suspect initially confessed to intentionally starting the fire using a lighter and petrol before retracting his statement. He is one of at least six individuals questioned in connection with the incident.

President Emmanuel Macron, visiting the affected area, emphasized that there would be no leniency for arsonists. He noted that 10% of the forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was destroyed and expressed relief that no lives were lost.

France, like much of Europe, has been experiencing severe heatwaves, leading to a surge in wildfires. President Macron remarked that the country had not witnessed such a high number of fires since World War II, with nearly 11,000 registered this year.

The fire caused partial closure of the nation’s main north-south motorway. Climate change is cited as a major factor escalating heatwaves and wildfires across Europe, with the continent warming at twice the global average.

This investigation into the Fontainebleau fire highlights the increasing threat of wildfires driven by climate change, a phenomenon also evidenced by major blazes across Spain and Scotland this summer.
