Uganda Nears Ebola-Free Status Amidst Ongoing Vigilance

Uganda is in the final stretch of its battle against the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus, with Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi confirming a 21-day streak without new cases. This positive development, announced to Parliament, is a strong indicator that local transmission has been halted.

Despite this encouraging news, the country must still observe the World Health Organization’s (WHO) strict 42-day protocol before it can be officially declared Ebola-free. This period, equivalent to two full incubation cycles of the virus, is critical for ensuring the outbreak is truly over.

Since the initial declaration of the outbreak on May 15, 2026, Uganda registered a total of 20 cases. A significant portion, 15 cases, were imported from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Minister acknowledged that late presentation of symptoms contributed to the two fatalities recorded within Uganda.

Dr. Baryomunsi highlighted the effectiveness of Uganda’s response system, attributing successes to the country’s accumulated experience in managing such health crises. Nevertheless, collaborative efforts with the DRC remain a priority. Uganda is supporting its neighbor by establishing Ebola treatment centers and deploying over 50 specialists.

Joint surveillance initiatives and the establishment of laboratories at border points in Arua and Kasese districts are ongoing. Furthermore, awareness campaigns and interventions, including restrictions on community markets and the closure of borders with the DRC, are being maintained. The government is also actively engaging with countries that imposed travel bans on Ugandans due to the outbreak.

While commending the health ministry’s efforts, some legislators noted that communication surrounding the outbreak could have been clearer, potentially impacting Uganda’s international image and leading to cancellations of tourist visits. However, the overall response from the government and its committees has been largely applauded.
