Uganda Discharges Last Ebola Patient, Initiating 42-Day Countdown to Outbreak Declaration

Uganda has officially discharged its last patient being treated for the Ebola virus, initiating a crucial 42-day waiting period before the outbreak can be formally declared ended. The patient, who hailed from the Democratic Republic of Congo, had been receiving care at the Mulago National Referral Hospital’s Ebola Isolation Centre and has now made a full recovery.

Speaking at the discharge ceremony, Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi highlighted this as a major achievement for Uganda’s public health efforts. “This is indeed a moment of joy,” he stated, emphasizing that “with early detection, prompt treatment, and a strong health system, Ebola can be defeated.” He noted that Uganda managed a case fatality rate of approximately 10% for this Bundibugyo strain outbreak, which is considered low.

Dr. Baryomunsi extended his gratitude to the frontline health workers, surveillance teams, and all partners involved, stating, “This achievement belongs to our health workers, technical teams, partners, and the people of Uganda who worked together to stop the spread of the disease.” However, he cautioned the public against complacency, reminding them that the outbreak is not officially over until 42 consecutive days pass without new cases, following the 21-day incubation period.

The ministry continues to monitor the situation in the DRC and maintain surveillance measures, especially at border crossings. Government is also engaging with countries that imposed travel restrictions to resume normal travel and trade. Dr. David Kaggwa, head of the Mulago Ebola Treatment Unit, remarked on the facility’s growing capacity, noting it has been utilized effectively in previous epidemics. The 80-bed isolation unit is staffed by multidisciplinary teams providing comprehensive supportive care.

Dr. Kasonde Mwinga, WHO Country Representative, attributed the successful containment to Uganda’s “years of preparedness” and sustained investment in its health systems, which allowed for a swift and effective response when the outbreak was declared.
