Three Factory Workers Apprehended in Kassanda for Shs21.3 Million Plywood Store Heist

Authorities in Kassanda District have taken three individuals into custody following a significant store break-in at the Musana Plywood Factory. The suspects, a mix of current and former employees, are accused of stealing a variety of factory equipment.

The incident occurred on the night of July 8, 2026, when unknown perpetrators breached a store at the Chinese-owned facility in Lubumba LC1, Myanzi Parish. The stolen items included three water pumps, a grinding machine, a drilling machine, a compressor, and other equipment, collectively valued at Shs21.3 million.

Following a report by the factory manager, police initiated an investigation, using a canine unit to track a trail from the scene. This led to the discovery of some abandoned stolen property along the route. Although the canine unit lost the primary trail, intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of two former employees, Charles Opio and George Atuhaire, on July 9.

During interrogation, Opio and Atuhaire reportedly admitted their involvement and implicated three other individuals. They also revealed the location where the stolen equipment had been taken. A third suspect, identified only as Ramer and reportedly a current employee, was arrested on factory premises on July 11.

Police have confirmed that all the stolen equipment has been recovered. Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the two remaining suspects. The arrested individuals will face charges of store breaking and theft once approved by the Resident State Attorney.

SSP Kigozi also issued a warning to workers against engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing that such acts can deter potential investors and harm the region’s economic development.
