Speaker Orders Return of MPs' Parking Spaces at Parliament

Parliamentary parking spaces previously allocated to Members of Parliament are set to be restored to their original function. The directive comes from Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth Oboth after legislators raised concerns about a number of these bays being converted into storage areas.

The issue was brought to light during a plenary session when Kalungu West MP Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu informed the House that several parking spots meant for MPs were being used for storage.

“Some areas meant for MPs’ parking have been converted into storage spaces,” Ssewungu stated, highlighting the inconvenience this caused. The change meant that MPs struggled to find adequate parking within the parliamentary grounds.

In response to these grievances, Speaker Oboth Oboth instructed the Clerk to Parliament to take swift action. The Speaker emphasized that the parking bays were specifically intended to ensure easy access for legislators and should not be utilized for storage or any other unapproved purpose.

Following the Speaker’s directive, parliamentary staff have been tasked with clearing the affected parking bays. Any stored items must be relocated to designated storage facilities within the parliamentary premises.

This decision was met with approval from several MPs who believe that restoring the parking spaces will alleviate congestion, improve accessibility to Parliament, and bolster security within the parliamentary complex.
