Quality Chemicals Limited, a prominent Ugandan pharmaceutical firm, is embarking on a significant expansion of its manufacturing capacity. The company has commenced construction on a new, larger facility within the Uganda Investment Authority’s Luzira Industrial and Business Park. This strategic move is set to bolster the production of essential antiretroviral and antimalarial medications.
Furthermore, the expanded plant will introduce new production lines focused on treating tuberculosis and sickle-cell disease, alongside the capacity to manufacture injectable pharmaceuticals. This ambitious project marks a key milestone as the company celebrates two decades of operation, having grown from producing just two medicines to offering a diverse portfolio of 25 registered products across two manufacturing sites.
Emmanuel Katongole, Chair of Quality Chemicals, emphasized the company’s commitment to future growth, stating, “We are investing in capacity, bringing our next facility on stream to serve a broader range of patients with a broader range of medicines. Our investments in capacity, in people, and in access are investments in the future.”
This expansion follows recent successes, including the completion of a Hydroxyurea manufacturing facility and the launch of Sikurea, a locally produced treatment for sickle-cell disease. The company’s CEO, Ajay Kumar Pal, highlighted the diversification efforts, citing the introduction of 15 new products in both public and private sectors, covering therapeutic areas such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, diabetes, and hypertension.
Financially, Quality Chemicals has demonstrated robust performance, achieving its strongest results in 20 years with a 38.8% increase in profit after tax for the year ending March 31, 2026. Revenue saw an 8.7% rise, and gross profit margins improved due to effective cost control measures. The company’s share price on the Uganda Securities Exchange has also seen a significant recovery.
The Uganda Investment Authority is actively promoting investment opportunities within the nation’s pharmaceutical sector, offering incentives to potential investors to further enhance local manufacturing capabilities.
