Members of Parliament are pressing the government to accelerate the development of crucial road networks across the country, aligning with President Yoweri Museveni’s infrastructure agenda outlined in his State-of-the-Nation Address. Several legislators highlighted specific projects that are facing significant delays, impacting economic opportunities and connectivity.

Hon. Onesimus Twinamasiko pointed to the stalled development of vital oil roads in the Albertine region, such as the Nalweyo-Kisiita-Mpasana-Nkoko-Masode Road. He emphasized its importance for monitoring the oil pipeline, noting that feasibility studies were completed in 2017 but work has not progressed, despite the road being critical for oil exploration.

Representing Agago County, Hon. Edward Makmot called for the urgent funding and construction of the Moroto road. Described as a historical security road traversing over ten districts in the Acholi and Karamoja sub-regions, it also holds potential for the mineral and tourism sectors, including access to Kidepo Valley National Park.

In Bududa, Woman Representative Hon. Agnes Khainza appealed for immediate attention to the Bubulo-Bududa circular road. She noted that despite presidential promises and its inclusion in the NRM manifesto, the road remains unpaved, hindering access to markets and connectivity for many communities.

Further calls for action came from Hon. Ivan Kyeyune, who urged the fulfillment of presidential pledges for road infrastructure in Nakasongola, essential for farmers to transport their produce. While Hon. Joy Waako acknowledged the government’s progress in extending road networks, noting the positive impact on the elderly’s access to healthcare, the overarching theme from several MPs is the need for more decisive action on key projects.

Additionally, Hon. Shyam Jay Tanna advocated for the expedited completion of the standard gauge railway, citing regional progress and the potential economic benefits for Uganda. He also stressed the importance of timely compensation for affected persons and improving adjacent road networks.

These discussions occurred during a plenary sitting on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as Parliament considered a motion to appreciate the President’s State-of-the-Nation Address. President Museveni, in his address, mentioned plans to shift heavy cargo to the railway and petroleum products to pipelines, which should reduce pressure on road infrastructure.
