Luweero-Butalangu Road: Affected Residents Assured of Compensation as Project Nears Completion

Residents whose properties lie along the path of the Luweero-Butalangu Road project have been reassured by the Ministry of Works and Transport that their compensation is being processed. The assurance comes as the Shs93.8 billion, 29.7-kilometre road nears its final stages.

Ministry spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa Kyobe stated that efforts are underway to settle all outstanding compensation payments within the current financial quarter. He appealed to affected individuals to work with the contractor, emphasizing the road’s significance as a public investment set to benefit communities in both Luweero and Nakaseke districts.

The road project, which commenced in June 2023 with an expected two-year completion timeline, is now reported to be 85 percent complete by the contractor, Dott Services Limited. Approximately 2.8 kilometres of the road remain unfinished, with specific sections in Luweero, including areas around Kiwoko and Wansalangi, stalled due to pending compensation for landowners.

Isaac Ssebuliba, measurements engineer for Dott Services, noted that while the company is prepared to finish the work, compensation delays are impacting the original schedule. Ministry officials have committed to engaging with the affected residents to facilitate the finalization of these payments and allow the contractor to proceed.

Ssempebwa reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its compensation obligations, comparing the current situation to others where residents have cooperated. He highlighted the eventual benefits of the completed road, which will significantly improve transportation and market access for local communities, and commended those who have already allowed construction to move forward.

Finishing works such as road marking and the installation of speed humps are already underway. The government anticipates the road’s full completion before the end of the year, contingent on the resolution of the remaining compensation matters.
