Kakira Health Centre III Elevated to IV After Major Upgrade

Kakira Health Centre III in Jinja District has officially been upgraded to a Health Centre IV, a significant advancement in healthcare delivery for the Butembe Constituency. This elevation means residents will now have closer access to crucial services including surgery, maternity care, and emergency treatments, reducing the need for long-distance travel to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

The upgrade was a result of extensive lobbying and a generous funding contribution from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which financed the construction of vital infrastructure. This includes a modern operating theatre, an expanded maternity ward, an outpatient department, improved sanitation, a reliable water system, and essential utilities like a standby generator and a medical waste incinerator.

Previously, the lack of a Health Centre IV status meant many residents faced delays in receiving specialized medical attention, often with tragic consequences. The efforts of former Jinja District Woman MP Loy Katali were instrumental in securing the support from the Church, turning a long-standing need into a tangible reality for the community.

During the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Charles Mugahi, Commissioner for Maternal and Child Health at the Ministry of Health, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure nationwide. He assured the community that the Ministry would ensure the newly upgraded facility is fully equipped and staffed to operate effectively.

The Officer-in-Charge of the Health Centre, Anthony Tuliraba, expressed gratitude while also highlighting the rapidly growing population and appealing for further support and specialized personnel. Representatives from the Church and local government officials also emphasized the importance of adequate staffing and equipment to maximize the benefit of the new infrastructure.

This enhancement is expected to alleviate the burden on Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and provide much-needed, accessible healthcare services to the people of Kakira and surrounding areas.
