Erias Lukwago Committed to High Court on Misprision of Treason Charge

Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been committed to the High Court for trial on a charge of misprision of treason. The committal proceedings took place at the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, where Lukwago appeared visibly frail under tight security.

Lukwago is accused by the state of failing to report information related to an alleged plot to overthrow the government by force. Prosecutors claim that, in his capacity as leader of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Lukwago was aware of activities involving senior party members but did not alert security authorities.

This charge stems from alleged activities involving PFF leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and associate Hajj Obeid Lutale, who were arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, in November 2024 and face similar charges. The prosecution alleges Lukwago knew of Besigye and Lutale’s travels to Nairobi for meetings concerning the alleged plot.

The court heard that electronic evidence, including WhatsApp communications, will be presented to show discussions about organizing a meeting in Nairobi to discuss plans for overthrowing the Ugandan government. The prosecution further alleges that Lukwago was aware of other individuals seeking assistance for the alleged plan but failed to report this to the authorities.

Prior to the committal, Lukwago’s legal team, led by Medard Lubega Ssegona, reiterated their concerns about his health, citing complications from previous surgeries and ongoing medical issues. They argue he requires specialized treatment abroad. Lukwago has denied the charges, asserting they are politically motivated.

The offence of misprision of treason involves knowingly concealing information about an intended act of treason and failing to report it to authorities in a timely manner.
