Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake is set to chair the Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation, a role that places him in a position of oversight over government promises. Notably, Anita Among, the current Speaker of Parliament, is a member of this committee.

This arrangement marks a significant shift from two years ago when Among, as Speaker, oversaw the process that removed Zaake from the Parliamentary Commission. Zaake has consistently argued that this action was politically motivated.

However, Zaake has stated he will not seek retribution. Instead, he plans to lead by example, emphasizing adherence to the parliamentary rules that Among herself helped to shape. He expressed a desire to show her “how leadership is supposed to be exercised,” highlighting the unpredictable nature of political careers where today’s leader can become tomorrow’s subordinate.

Zaake sees his new position as a platform to hold the government accountable for its unfulfilled promises to Ugandans, citing issues such as the delayed upload of election results and the poor state of roads. He acknowledged the challenge of having only two opposition members on the committee, but remains undeterred, stating that fear has never guided his actions.

He extended a warm welcome to Speaker Among, viewing her presence on the committee as a powerful reminder of the need for humility and fair treatment in leadership. Zaake has assured that he will lead differently from how he was treated in the past, pledging to respect parliamentary rules and encouraging Among to participate actively.

Zaake maintained that he will remain steadfast in his principles, continuing to speak out on important issues and defending himself within the bounds of the law, while prioritizing the broader struggle for the benefit of Ugandans.
