Uganda to Compensate Families of Soldiers Fallen in Somalia

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has assured Parliament that the government is committed to compensating families of Ugandan soldiers who lost their lives serving in Somalia. This commitment was made during Prime Minister’s Question Time on Thursday, July 9, 2026, chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa.

The Prime Minister’s statement was a direct response to concerns voiced by Hon. Gilbert Olanya, the Member of Parliament for Kilak South County. Mr. Olanya highlighted that many Ugandan soldiers serve diligently in Somalia, but some return without full payment, and tragically, some have died in the line of duty.

“I would like to know the government plan in paying the arrears of those ones who were not paid from Somalia up to now,” Olanya stated, emphasizing the need for government action.

Prime Minister Nabbanja confirmed that the Ugandan government has been in dialogue with the African Union (AU) and international partners to address the issue of delayed troop payments. She reported that these engagements, including a delegation to Ethiopia in February 2026, have led to financial support from the AU and partners to clear outstanding dues for Ugandan soldiers. “I am happy to report that African Union and our partners have since supported the government of Uganda to pay our people,” she said.

To facilitate the compensation process for fallen soldiers, the Prime Minister requested Parliament to provide specific details, especially the names of those who died while on duty. “I would like to get the names of those people who were affected, especially those who died while on duty, so that the process of compensation can be done properly,” Nabbanja urged.

The discussion about soldier compensation occurred alongside updates on other pressing national issues, including potential famine in the Greater North and water shortages in cattle corridors.
