Uganda's Inter-Religious Council Urges South Korea to Release Religious Leader Lee Man-hee

Joshua Kitakule, Secretary General of the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), has formally appealed to the Government of South Korea to release Lee Man-hee, the Chairman of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Kitakule argues that Lee’s continued detention is detrimental to the principles of due process, justice, and international peace-building efforts.
In a letter dated July 14, 2026, addressed to South Korean authorities, Kitakule, who also holds the title of Peace Ambassador with Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), urged for a fair, transparent, and lawful handling of Lee’s case. While acknowledging Lee’s arrest in connection with election-related allegations, Kitakule stressed that any concerns should be resolved through an impartial judicial system.
“In any democratic society, justice must be pursued through transparent and impartial due process. Mistakes or misjudgements, if they occurred, should be addressed within the framework of law, not through measures that risk appearing politically motivated or disproportionate,” Kitakule stated in the letter.
Kitakule highlighted Lee’s role as a global religious figure whose peace initiatives have fostered dialogue and unity across diverse communities and borders. The IRCU believes that Lee’s detention not only infringes on his personal liberty but also hinders the decades-long peace-building work he champions.
“Releasing Chairman Lee would demonstrate a commitment to justice and compassion, while allowing him to continue his invaluable work in fostering unity and understanding among peoples,” he added. Kitakule further emphasized that prolonged detention without fair legal proceedings is disproportionate, especially given Lee’s advanced age and consistent advocacy for peace and reconciliation.
The IRCU’s appeal implores the South Korean government to uphold human rights and ensure justice is administered with dignity. Kitakule expressed hope that the matter would be resolved amicably and in accordance with democratic principles and respect for human rights, particularly in a global climate grappling with division and conflict.
