Uganda Braces for Hotter, Drier July Amid El Niño Fears

Uganda should prepare for a hotter and drier July in 2026, as the Minister of State for Environment, Hon. Beatrice Anywar, issued a warning during a parliamentary plenary session. The outlook indicates warmer-than-normal conditions and a significant reduction in rainfall across the nation.

Regions including Northern and parts of Eastern Uganda are expected to see only scattered, light showers. Central Uganda, the areas around Lake Victoria, Southwestern Uganda, and other eastern sections are predicted to remain predominantly dry. This aligns with earlier seasonal forecasts predicting suppressed rainfall due to the developing El Niño in the Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean.

The anticipated dry spell poses considerable risks. Farmers may face reduced crop yields, while livestock could suffer from heat stress and diminished pasture. The increased likelihood of pests and diseases could further impact food production. Water resources are also vulnerable, with potential declines in water levels, leading to shortages and an elevated risk of wildfires, alongside threats to biodiversity.

In response to these predictions and broader environmental concerns raised by MPs, Minister Anywar stressed the importance of integrating this weather forecast into planning for all climate-sensitive sectors. She highlighted the need for water conservation strategies and efficient water use for both domestic and agricultural purposes.

Discussions in Parliament also touched upon wetland destruction and the expansion of urban green spaces, with MPs urging more stringent regulations and proactive measures. The Ministry of Environment plans to continue issuing regular weather updates to aid in preparedness and decision-making across sectors such as agriculture, health, disaster management, and water resource management.
