UBOS Equips 80 Data Collectors for Upcoming National Household Survey

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has initiated a comprehensive 15-day training program for 80 data collectors in preparation for the upcoming Ninth Uganda National Household Survey (UNHS) slated for 2026/2027.

The intensive training, taking place at Kabira Country Club in Kampala, is designed to equip participants with essential technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for effective nationwide data collection.

During the opening ceremony, UBOS Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza congratulated the selected trainees, highlighting their successful navigation of a competitive recruitment process. He stressed the importance of their role in upholding the quality of Uganda’s statistical output.

Dr. Mukiza urged the participants to approach the training with seriousness, emphasizing the need to fully grasp both the survey methodologies and the significance of the information they will gather from households. He cautioned that failure to meet the required standards could impact future participation in UBOS-organized statistical assignments.

“If you do not do a good job during data collection, then you have deviated from the main purpose of this survey,” Dr. Mukiza stated, underscoring that the credibility of official statistics hinges on the accuracy and reliability of fieldwork.

Quality data is fundamental for effective national planning, policy formulation, and informed decision-making. Following this training, UBOS will conduct field tests to evaluate survey tools, procedures, and the readiness of the data collectors for the main survey.

The UNHS collects vital socio-economic data, including information on education, health, housing, and food security. The findings are instrumental in assessing poverty, monitoring trends, measuring household welfare, and guiding evidence-based government interventions and national development priorities.

The previous, Eighth Uganda National Household Survey, released in May 2025, provided crucial insights into the nation’s socio-economic landscape. The upcoming ninth round is expected to deliver updated statistics to further inform government programs and future development strategies.
