Tororo Registers Low Turnout for Voters' Roll Display, Election Officials Concerned

The exercise to display the National Voters Register in Tororo Municipality, a crucial step before the Local Council I elections, has concluded with a notable lack of public participation. Officials at various display centers reported significantly fewer residents than expected turning up to verify their details.

At Bison A Cell, only 44 out of 546 registered voters made an appearance over the two-day period. Mercy Ekaal, the Display Officer, expressed her surprise at the low numbers, noting that the first day saw only 40 individuals participate.

A similar trend was observed at Agururu A3 Cell, where just 56 out of 468 registered voters confirmed their particulars. Display Officer Dennis Lugoye suggested that inadequate sensitization efforts were a primary reason for the poor turnout. He pointed out that reliance on radio and television, platforms not accessible to everyone, might have excluded many.

Further complicating matters, some residents voiced concerns about the public nature of Local Council I elections. The practice of voters lining up behind their preferred candidates was cited as a deterrent, with some fearing community repercussions for their choices. Stephen Ochieng, a resident, explained that this fear discourages participation, fearing the problem might be even more pronounced during the actual elections.

Moses Adyoma, another resident, advocated for more direct, community-based sensitization methods, recalling past practices involving loudspeakers and mobile outreach that proved more effective. The low turnout presents a significant challenge for election officials and local leaders as they strive to boost voter engagement before the forthcoming elections.
