Pope Francis Appoints Fr. Bosco Gubazire as New Bishop of Kabale Diocese

The Catholic Church has a new shepherd for the Kabale Diocese. Pope Francis has officially appointed Monsignor Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire, a member of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), to lead the diocese.

This appointment follows the retirement of the Most Reverend Callist Rubaramira, who stepped down after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75, as stipulated by Canon Law. The Vatican announced the transition on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for the Kabale Diocese.

Born in 1974 in the Kabale Diocese itself, Bishop-elect Gubazire’s journey in faith began at local seminaries before he pursued higher studies in philosophy and theology. His priestly ordination took place on August 10, 2003.

His ministry has been extensive, including service in Mozambique as an assistant parish priest and adult education director. He has also undertaken specialized formation training in France and pursued advanced studies in philosophy in Ireland.

Further enriching his pastoral and academic experience, Bishop-elect Gubazire served as a lecturer and dean of studies in Malawi, and later pursued doctoral studies in philosophy in the Philippines, obtaining his doctorate in 2020.

During his time in the Philippines, he held various leadership roles within the Missionaries of Africa. More recently, he has been involved in academic leadership in Ghana, serving as dean of studies and rector of a formation house, while also serving on the Provincial Council of the Ghana-Nigeria Province.

Bishop-elect Gubazire succeeds Bishop Rubaramira, who is recognized for his nearly two decades of leadership that strengthened pastoral activities, education, and healthcare within the diocese. The date for his episcopal ordination and installation will be announced by the diocese soon.
