Parliament Forms 20-Member Committee for EALA By-Election Verification

The Ugandan Parliament has moved swiftly to fill two vacant positions in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) by forming a special 20-member committee. This committee is tasked with verifying the credentials of aspiring representatives.

The vacancies at EALA arose after Members of Parliament James Kakooza and Denis Namara resigned their seats to take up positions within Uganda’s National Parliament.

Presiding over the parliamentary session, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa announced the formation of the committee and stressed the urgency of the process. The aim is to have the new EALA representatives in place and ready to commence their duties as early as the following week.

The committee will focus on scrutinizing the qualifications of the two nominated candidates, Stella Kiryowa and Fred Bangumya. Their credentials must be thoroughly checked before their names can be put forward for election by the full Parliament.

Sheema Municipality MP Dickson Kateshumbwa has been appointed to chair the verification committee. Several other notable members, including Martin Mugabi Muzaale, Ofwono Opondo, and Margaret Rwabushaija, are part of this important delegation.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa emphasized that the verification process needs to be both transparent and swift. He warned against any unnecessary delays that could create a leadership vacuum in Uganda’s representation at the regional legislative body.

Uganda is allocated nine representatives in the EALA, which serves as the legislative organ of the East African Community (EAC).
