Parliament Demands Probe into Deadly Mukono Train-Bus Collision

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has called for a thorough parliamentary investigation into the recent fatal collision between a train and a school bus at the Namumira railway crossing in Mukono Municipality. The accident, which occurred on July 10, 2026, involved a passenger train and a bus carrying students from Mwebaza High School on an educational trip. The collision resulted in the tragic death of a teacher and injuries to multiple students.

During a plenary session, Tayebwa emphasized the critical need for improved safety measures at railway crossings, suggesting a review of current protocols. “When the train is crossing, we should block the roads and not a traffic officer standing in the middle of the road, so that we do not lose more people,” he stated.

These remarks came after concerns were raised by Hon. Robert Maseruka, who represents Mukono County South. Maseruka advocated for stricter enforcement of penalties for individuals who disregard rules at railway crossings. He also proposed the implementation of integrated early warning systems to prevent future accidents, noting that such crossings often receive priority in other countries.

“We need physical infrastructure control that should be placed on these crossings,” Maseruka urged, further calling for public awareness campaigns on railway safety and the prosecution of violators. He also stressed the importance of a countrywide safety audit of railway crossings and the allocation of resources for their modernization.

In response, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Crispus Kiyonga, assured the House that the matter has been discussed in Cabinet, and the government is taking steps to address the situation.
