Ntungamo Gears Up for Grassroots Elections as LC1 and Women Council Nominations Commence

The nomination period for Local Council I (LC1) chairpersons and Women Council Committee members has officially begun in Ntungamo District. Hoping to represent their communities at the grassroots level, a significant number of prospective leaders presented themselves at various sub-county headquarters to be cleared for the upcoming polls.

This five-day nomination exercise, scheduled to conclude on July 19, marks the formal commencement of the electoral process for these crucial local positions. District Returning Officer Honest Baguma reported a smooth start, noting the high turnout of aspirants. “The exercise has started successfully and people interested in offices have turned up in large numbers,” Baguma stated, adding that those not processed on the first day would be accommodated on subsequent days.

Following the nomination phase, successfully nominated candidates will proceed to campaign periods before the final elections are conducted by the Electoral Commission.

Several aspirants have voiced their motivations for seeking office. Deus Karuhanga, vying for the LC1 chairperson seat in Kabingo Cell, Eastern Division, cited pressing community issues such as inadequate water supply, poor sanitation, and poor road infrastructure as his reasons for contesting. Similarly, Nicholas Sentongo, an LC1 aspirant for Park Ward II, highlighted community encouragement stemming from his past contributions to local development and their confidence in his leadership to ensure transparent delivery of government services.

The successful completion of nominations and subsequent campaigns will pave the way for the broader grassroots elections across the district.
