The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially concluded its internal processes for selecting and endorsing candidates who will represent the party in the forthcoming Village Women Council and Local Council I (LC1) elections. This move signifies the party’s readiness for the democratic exercise at the grassroots level.

NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, announced that the party successfully conducted village-level barazas to identify and validate its potential leaders. These individuals have now had their nomination forms endorsed by the party, clearing them to proceed with the official nomination process by the Electoral Commission, which is scheduled from July 16 to 19.

Todwong emphasized the importance of party members’ engagement, urging them to participate in the ongoing display of voter registers by the Electoral Commission to ensure accuracy. He also highlighted the structure of the Village Women Council, which will elect leaders for five key positions: chairperson, vice chairperson, treasurer, secretary, and secretary for publicity. These leaders will form a crucial link from the community to national representation.

Regarding the LC1 elections, slated for July 28, Todwong underscored the significance of the village chairperson position as a foundational element of Uganda’s decentralized governance system. He noted that the NRM’s Resistance Council system empowers communities to elect their own leaders, fostering local participation and accountability.

The NRM leadership expressed confidence in their selected candidates and urged party members to rally behind them, participate peacefully in the elections, and ensure a strong showing for the party at the grassroots. The party has completed its preparations and is poised for the electoral contests.
