Museveni Inaugurates NEC Meat and Beans Factory, Champions Agro-Industrialization

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned the new NEC Meat and Beans Processing Factory, a significant venture located in Katonga, Gomba District. This modern facility is a collaborative effort between NEC, the commercial wing of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and Kenyan investor Francis Ragwa.

President Museveni lauded Mr. Ragwa for his investment in Uganda’s agro-processing landscape, highlighting the factory’s potential to drive value addition, generate employment, and expand the nation’s industrial base. He emphasized that Uganda possesses ample raw materials but faces challenges in farmer organization and market access, not production capacity.

Drawing parallels with the successful transformation of Uganda’s coffee and dairy sectors, where strategic planning and farmer mobilization led to substantial output increases, the President expressed confidence in the country’s potential. He noted the significant growth in coffee production, from three million to nine million bags annually, with ambitious targets for further expansion. Similarly, the dairy sector has seen a dramatic rise in production.

The Head of State outlined that the government will explore the most effective supply chain model for the factory, considering both large-scale commercial farmers and organized smallholder farmers. He stressed the importance of market certainty in stimulating production and mobilizing farmers.

President Museveni also called upon government leaders to be proactive in supporting investments, ensuring that essential infrastructure, such as electricity, is in place for licensed projects. He expressed optimism that the new government team will enhance coordination and remove impediments to industrial growth.

The commissioning signifies a strategic move towards reducing reliance on imported processed foods for military operations and bolstering national self-sufficiency. The factory is expected to create jobs for young Ugandans and provide a consistent market for local livestock and bean producers, aligning with the nation’s agro-industrialization agenda.

This development marks a step towards realizing Uganda’s potential as a major player in the global beef export market, given its favorable climate and quality livestock, provided disease control and export systems are strengthened. The partnership between NEC and private investors underscores the viability of regional cooperation and the role of private sector investment in national development.
