Man Detained for Alleged Threat Against Nigel Farage on Social Media

Metropolitan Police have apprehended a man in his twenties in connection with an alleged social media threat directed at Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The arrest took place in south London on Tuesday, stemming from a post made on the social media platform X.

Authorities reported the incident on May 8th, a day after local and mayoral elections were held across the country. The individual was taken into custody on suspicion of sending threatening communications intended for a Member of Parliament. He has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

The arrest follows a significant event for the Reform UK party, occurring six days after their spokesperson, Ann Widdecombe, was reportedly killed at her home in Devon. Counter-terrorism police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

Nigel Farage was informed of the arrest by the Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team on Wednesday. He commented on the police’s proactive response, stating it was the first time they had acted so swiftly on a social media post and expressed hope for similar action on hundreds of other threats he has reportedly received this year.

The party’s home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, had earlier stated that Reform UK, if in government, would implement round-the-clock protection for all Members of Parliament. Yusuf emphasized that Farage lives under constant threat of serious danger and that those who doubt his need for security should reconsider their stance.
