Government Seeks More Time to Locate Arrested NUP Official

The government has asked Parliament for more time to ascertain the location of National Unity Platform (NUP) Vice President Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi. Kivumbi, also the former Member of Parliament for Butambala County, has been missing since his arrest on Friday, sparking significant concern.

During a plenary session on Wednesday, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, formally requested the extension from the House. This request followed a query raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, who highlighted the urgency of the situation.

Ssenyonyi informed the Parliament that it had been six days since Kivumbi’s arrest, and despite diligent efforts by his family, lawyers, and doctors, his current location remains undisclosed. This lack of information has intensified worries regarding adherence to legal procedures and constitutional protections for citizens.

Responding on behalf of the government, Dr. Kiyonga stated that the security agencies are actively managing the situation but require further time to compile a thorough report. He assured the House that once the report is finalized, the government will present it to Parliament to provide a comprehensive update to all members and the public.

The matter generated considerable discussion among legislators, with many MPs emphasizing the government’s constitutional obligation to present arrested individuals before a court within 48 hours and to promptly inform their relatives and legal representatives of their detention.

As of Wednesday evening, Muwanga Kivumbi’s whereabouts were still unknown to his concerned family and legal counsel.
