Congolese Army Arrests Soldiers for Desertion Amidst Intensified Eastern Fighting

In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the national army (FARDC) has arrested numerous soldiers in Kalemie city. These soldiers are accused of abandoning their combat positions and attempting to blend in with the civilian population. This action comes at a critical time, as clashes between the FARDC and the March 23 Movement/Alliance Fleuve Congo (M23/AFC) rebels, supported by Twirwaneho fighters, have significantly intensified across North and South Kivu provinces.

Rebel forces reportedly seized several key locations, including Point Zero in Minembwe, pushing FARDC troops and allied Wazalendo fighters towards Kalemie. Although reports indicate a recapture of the Kipupu trading center, the overall security situation remains volatile.

FARDC spokesperson Sgt Aristote Tshitamba stated that the arrests target suspected deserters and individuals who may have infiltrated the military ranks. He emphasized that the operation is crucial for reinstating discipline, maintaining public order, and ensuring the safety of civilians in and around Kalemie.

Some of the apprehended soldiers are currently held at Kalemie Central Prison awaiting legal proceedings. The FARDC urges residents to continue cooperating with security forces by reporting any suspicious activities.

These arrests occur while senior military officials and international partners work to bolster ceasefire monitoring mechanisms in the region. A delegation including FARDC officers and representatives from MONUSCO, the African Union, and the United States visited Goma to support the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJM+).

Despite these diplomatic efforts, accusations of ceasefire violations continue between the FARDC and M23/AFC. The Congolese government reiterates its claims of Rwandan backing for the M23, a charge consistently denied by Rwanda and the M23/AFC, who cite widespread corruption and discrimination as reasons for their armed campaign. The ongoing offensive by the M23 group since early 2025 has captured several towns, raising concerns about a broader regional conflict.
