The Rotary Club of Uptown Kampala gears up for an impactful year under the leadership of its new president, Dr. Frederick Bakandoda. Newly installed, Dr. Bakandoda, a founding member and former Rotaractor, outlined an ambitious service agenda designed to bring practical, visible, and impactful change to Kampala communities.

The club, which is barely three years old, has established itself as a hub for young professionals dedicated to community service, with a particular emphasis on health, youth development, and environmental sustainability.

A cornerstone of Dr. Bakandoda’s vision is an expanded focus on healthcare. The club’s initial major initiative will be a large-scale medical camp on July 25, organized in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Kampala South. This outreach aims to provide crucial services including immunizations, maternal care, youth treatments, and cancer screenings to underserved populations.

Building on past success, the club is also significantly scaling up its blood donation drive, partnering with the Buganda Kingdom to establish multiple collection points across various counties. This expansion seeks to increase accessibility and encourage broader participation in saving lives.

Furthermore, the “Health on the Go” program will extend the club’s medical services beyond Kampala, with planned outreaches in eastern Uganda, beginning in Iganga.

In addition to health, the club remains committed to youth empowerment through mentorship programs, such as its ongoing partnership with the Kampala Chess Association. Environmental sustainability is also a key focus, with plans to integrate environmental considerations into all club projects, including tree planting and pollution reduction initiatives.

The club’s growth and initiatives build on the foundational work of its charter president, Immy Nakyeyune Ainomugisha, who sought to create a welcoming space for young professionals transitioning from Rotaract. Despite the challenges of establishing a volunteer-driven organization, the club has already achieved notable successes, including polio immunization campaigns, medical outreaches, and initiatives promoting literacy and financial education for women and girls.
