The Parliament of Uganda is set to scrutinize the recent tragic accident at the Namumira railway crossing in Mukono Municipality, where a passenger train collided with a bus carrying students from Mwebaza High School. The incident, which occurred on July 10th, 2026, tragically claimed the life of a teacher and left several others injured.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa issued a directive during the plenary sitting on Tuesday, July 14th, 2026, mandating the Committee on Physical Infrastructure to conduct a thorough investigation. Tayebwa emphasized the critical need for improved safety measures at railway crossings, suggesting that roads should be actively blocked when trains approach, rather than relying solely on the presence of traffic officers.
These calls for action were initially prompted by concerns raised by Hon. Robert Maseruka, representing Mukono County South. Maseruka advocated for stricter enforcement of regulations at crossings and the implementation of integrated early warning systems to prevent future accidents. He highlighted that in many international contexts, railway crossings are treated with the highest priority, necessitating robust physical infrastructure controls.
Furthermore, Maseruka stressed the importance of public education on railway safety protocols and called for the prosecution of individuals who disregard these rules. He reiterated that safety is a collective responsibility and urged for the empowerment of traffic police to enforce penalties against drivers violating safety measures.
The Member of Parliament also called for a comprehensive safety audit of all railway crossings nationwide and the allocation of resources for their modernization. Responding to the issue, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Crispus Kiyonga, confirmed that the matter has been discussed within the Cabinet, and the government is taking steps to address the situation.
