Xabi Alonso, the new manager at Stamford Bridge, has clarified his reasons for choosing Chelsea over a potential return to Liverpool in a coaching capacity. Speaking at his inaugural press conference, Alonso indicated that the timing of opportunities played a crucial role in his decision.
“Well, it is about timings,” Alonso told BBC Sport when asked about the choice. “I am here today on my first day at Stamford Bridge, talking to you. I am looking forward to this challenge, a big challenge, and Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs and I am looking forward to having success here.”
This statement comes after reports suggested Alonso had not been in contact with Liverpool in the weeks leading up to his appointment at Chelsea. Liverpool, meanwhile, eventually parted ways with Arne Slot after a disappointing season, appointing Andoni Iraola as his successor.
Alonso’s arrival marks another move in Chelsea’s recent managerial history, as he is the sixth permanent manager under the ownership of BlueCo. While he holds the title of “manager,” a step up from “head coach” held by some predecessors, Alonso emphasized a collaborative approach with the club’s sporting director team.
“What I like is that we work together and we are all part of the decisions we take, we all feel responsible for that,” he explained. “The ultimate goal is clear and, for me, it is the way it should be.”
The team is looking to rebound after missing out on European qualification last season. Alonso noted the strong base already present and expressed confidence in reinforcing the squad effectively. He also highlighted the positive attitude of star player Cole Palmer, who is eager to impress after missing out on international call-ups.
“So far we have been together for a few days and he has come in with a positive mindset and positive spirit. He wants to enjoy playing football,” Alonso said of Palmer. “He is a special player, a different class with a different quality, and if we help him by building a team around him that allows his talent to shine, we will be closer to success.”
Alonso’s focus now is on building a successful future for Chelsea, emphasizing teamwork and strategic squad development. “We need to reinforce it in the right way and take good decisions to do that. The feeling is that we are aligned with the sporting directors. The ultimate goal is to have a good team, build the right squad and we are in that moment.”
