A recent joint security patrol in the Barawe Sub-Sector, involving the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Somali National Army (SNA), signals a strengthened partnership in combating insecurity, according to Colonel Justus Musenene, Commander of Battle Group 45 under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The operation, co-led by Colonel Musenene and his SNA counterpart Colonel Elmi Abdurahman, aimed to reinforce security, reassure the local populace, and disrupt the activities of Al-Shabaab militants in the strategic coastal town.

Colonel Musenene emphasized the significance of such collaborative efforts, stating, “Today’s patrol shows teamwork, comradeship, and what we can achieve when we work together.” He reiterated AUSSOM’s commitment to mentoring the SNA, strengthening local security structures, and fostering trust with the Somali people as the nation increasingly takes ownership of its security.

Addressing Al-Shabaab directly, Colonel Musenene urged insurgents to surrender, warning, “We know where you are and we’re coming for you. The better option is to surrender yourselves if you want to be safe.”

Colonel Abdurahman echoed these sentiments, calling for continued community support and highlighting the united front presented by the SNA and AUSSOM. “To the enemy, know that SNA and AUSSOM are united and we will not allow the enemy to disturb the prevailing peace in the region,” he stated.

Residents who interacted with the patrol welcomed the visible security presence and pledged their cooperation. Both commanders affirmed that these joint patrols and coordinated operations will persist across the Barawe Sub-Sector to deter threats, build public confidence, and foster an environment conducive to peace and development.

The operation was attended by various UPDF and SNA officers, including Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Ochan and Major Francis Odede. This initiative underscores the ongoing commitment to stabilizing Somalia.
