UK Bans Support for Iran's Revolutionary Guard, Citing National Security Threat

The United Kingdom has taken a significant step in designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a threat to national security. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that new government powers will be utilized to prohibit any form of support for the IRGC, which has been implicated in death threats, attacks, and intimidation within the UK.

Expressions of positive sentiment or direct assistance to the IRGC will now be considered offenses, potentially leading to sentences of up to 14 years in prison. This action extends to two other groups: the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR) and the Russian GRU’s volunteer corps. These measures aim to empower police and intelligence agencies to more effectively combat espionage, foreign interference, sabotage, and physical assaults originating from these entities.

Evidence suggests the IRGC has been linked to at least seven attacks targeting Jewish and Israeli communities in the UK. Prime Minister has previously committed to expediting the National Security (State Threats) Act, enabling these new proscription regulations to be presented to Parliament. “We will never let Britain be a playground for states who want to spread fear, division and violence on our streets,” stated Sir Keir Starmer, emphasizing the government’s commitment to prosecuting individuals involved in such activities within Britain.

If Parliament approves the regulations, acts of sabotage, including arson, carried out on behalf of these groups could result in life imprisonment. This new legislation simplifies prosecution by removing the need for prosecutors to establish a direct foreign power connection in every instance. Home Office minister Angela Eagle highlighted that the IRGC is a crucial part of Iran’s security apparatus, directly accountable to the Supreme Leader, and involved in intelligence and proxy operations to advance Iranian state objectives.

The IRGC, established after the 1979 revolution, has been accused by Western nations of sponsoring terrorism abroad and is already designated as a terror group by Australia, Canada, and the US, with the EU also adding it to its terror list earlier this year due to its role in cracking down on Iranian protesters. This UK decision reflects a response to the increasing scope and complexity of state-backed aggression impacting the security of the nation.
