Northern Uganda Farmer Transforms Life Through Radio Education

In northern Uganda, a radio is more than just a source of news; for Stella Aciro of Lamwo District, it has become a catalyst for significant life changes. A dedicated listener of the Farmer’s Voice Radio (FVR) program on Tembo FM, Aciro treats the broadcasts as a crucial appointment, not a casual pastime.

As an influential member of the Mar-Lonyo Group, a local radio listener association, Aciro doesn’t hoard the valuable agricultural insights she gains. She actively shares this knowledge with her family, neighbors, and fellow farmers, encouraging them to listen, discuss, and implement the lessons learned.

Prior to engaging with FVR, Aciro’s farming methods were traditional, leading to low productivity and depleted soil. The program introduced her to modern agronomy and sustainable land management techniques, including proper crop spacing and management, which dramatically improved her garden’s organization and yield. This led to increased harvests and new income-generating avenues.

A significant turning point came with the FVR’s emphasis on value addition. Instead of selling raw groundnuts at low prices post-harvest, Aciro now processes them into paste, earning substantially more. Her net profit from a single season exceeded Shs1 million, which has directly improved her family’s welfare, ensuring food security, access to healthcare, and school fees for her children.

Beyond farming techniques, Aciro benefited from financial literacy sessions. She now practices better money management, saving earnings with financial institutions, and has diversified into coffee farming for long-term financial stability. She notes that this increased knowledge empowers women, enhancing their participation in household decision-making and strengthening their influence through tangible contributions to family income and well-being.

Inspired by the program’s focus on cooperation, Aciro and the Mar-Lonyo Group are exploring collective farming and bulk marketing to bypass middlemen, negotiate better prices, and access larger markets. Furthermore, Aciro is contributing to environmental conservation through the TASLL Project, establishing a woodlot of over 3,400 trees, including native and fruit species, ensuring a sustainable source of future income and firewood.

Aciro’s journey exemplifies how accessible information via radio can transform rural livelihoods, foster financial independence, empower women, and promote environmental stewardship.
