The Kampala Northern Bypass is now fully open to traffic following the completion of extensive rehabilitation efforts. The Ministry of Works announced on Monday morning that all asphalt laying has been finalized, and the Namungoona–Bwaise section has reopened as of 10:00 a.m.
The directive for completion came last week from the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama. He issued a strict seven-day ultimatum to the contractor, Stirling Civil Engineering, to finalize the 21-kilometer stretch, emphatically denying any further extensions for a project that had already spanned three years.
Minister Byamukama previously described the prolonged construction as a “mess” during an inspection. He highlighted the significant negative impacts, including severe traffic congestion that led to missed flights, discouraged investors, and inconvenienced tourists arriving in Kampala. The government had refused the contractor’s request for more time, citing the escalating costs and disruption to road users and the economy, with the project’s budget at Shs67 billion.
While the road is now open, the ministry noted that road marking will be carried out in the coming days. This work is expected to cause minimal disruption to traffic flow. The reopening is anticipated to significantly ease congestion that has plagued commuters using this vital artery.
Minister Byamukama expressed his satisfaction with the contractor’s compliance with his directive to complete the asphalt works promptly. “I am pleased that the asphalt laying has now been completed as directed and the section will reopen to traffic this morning,” he stated.
This development brings much-needed relief to motorists and the broader economy after years of delayed construction. For further details, the original report can be found at https://nilepost.co.ug/news/355743/northern-bypass-rehabilitation-completed-road-fully-reopens-to-traffic-today
