Parenting advocate Hafy Ahmed has issued a stark warning about the profound and lasting impact of parental neglect on children’s well-being. She emphasized that neglect isn’t always about physical absence but often stems from emotional detachment, which can leave deep scars well into adulthood.
Ahmed explained that children who feel ignored or unsupported emotionally often grapple with issues of trust, self-worth, and regulating their emotions later in life. They may exhibit behavioral problems like acting out or withdrawing, constantly seeking validation in unhealthy ways.
“What parents fail to give at home—attention, reassurance and structure—children will desperately look for elsewhere. And too often, they find it in the wrong places,” Ahmed stated during a discussion on Salam TV’s Omukeze programme.
She clarified that effective parenting involves much more than providing basic needs. It requires consistent presence, active listening, offering clear structure, and providing unconditional emotional support. By choosing presence and proactive engagement over indifference, parents can actively foster resilient and confident children.
Ahmed also differentiated between discipline and punishment. She argued that children learn and build trust more effectively through guidance that explains reasons behind expectations, rather than through reactive punishment that creates distance.
While acknowledging the roles of schools and communities, Ahmed reiterated that parents bear the primary responsibility for ensuring a child’s safety, love, and guidance. She urged parents to prioritize consistency and emotional availability over the pursuit of perfection, emphasizing that children need present, understanding parents who make them feel seen and loved.
This discussion highlights the critical need for parents to be emotionally invested in their children’s lives to prevent long-term emotional damage. Read more on the impact of parental neglect via Nile Post.
