Busoga Ghetto Leaders Applaud Museveni's Empowerment Initiative

Leaders representing ghetto communities across the Busoga sub-region have expressed gratitude towards President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his administration’s focus on economic empowerment and organized development. This commendation was voiced during a three-day retreat held in Iganga Municipality, themed “Empowering the Ghettos for a Crime-Free Society.”

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ghetto Structure Project in collaboration with security agencies and presidential advisors, aims to transform underserved urban areas by promoting responsible leadership, reducing crime rates, and integrating youth into national development programs.

Maj. Emma Kutesa, Deputy National Coordinator of the Ghetto Structure Project, highlighted President Museveni’s vision in establishing the initiative. He noted that the project injects funds into Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) within these communities, enabling youth to improve their livelihoods and escape the stigma previously associated with their living conditions.

Maj. Kutesa urged the leaders to actively mobilize fellow youth to engage with government wealth creation programs and to diligently combat poverty. He also stressed the importance of cooperating with security agencies to eliminate criminality, emphasizing that Uganda has no place for criminal activities and that those involved are on the wrong path.

Concerns regarding corruption were also addressed, with assurances of continued government support contingent on the transparent and accountable management of funds. Leaders were warned of legal repercussions for any misuse of their positions or resources, underscoring that government support aims to directly benefit rightful beneficiaries through traceable channels like bank accounts.

During the retreat, participants also engaged in elections for regional leadership positions within the Busoga Ghetto Structure. The newly elected leadership is tasked with overseeing affairs across eleven districts and Jinja City, further solidifying the organization of these communities. Leaders expressed that the initiative has already begun to shift public perception and encourage a move away from crime towards positive change and entrepreneurship.
