Lawmakers from the Bunyoro region are consolidating their efforts by drafting a unified parliamentary agenda to collectively address pressing development issues with the government. This initiative aims to overcome the fragmentation of efforts seen in previous parliamentary terms, where individual constituency interests often overshadowed regional needs.
The proposed agenda prioritizes several critical areas. A key demand is the long-overdue operationalization of Bunyoro University, a commitment that has been sought by the region since Uganda’s independence. MPs are also focusing on land rights, advocating for measures such as affirmative action and affordable land titling processes to protect the interests of local communities.
Furthermore, the caucus intends to ensure that Bunyoro residents significantly benefit from the burgeoning oil and gas sector. This includes pushing for increased local participation in employment and business opportunities related to these major national projects. The lawmakers believe a united front will lend greater weight to their appeals than individual approaches.
Publicity secretary for the caucus and Hoima City West MP, Ismail Kasule, highlighted that past failures to coordinate led to missed opportunities. “We have agreed on unity. We will put the Bunyoro agenda first,” Kasule stated, emphasizing a commitment to prioritize regional development over political affiliations. The caucus, comprising 28 MPs, with a majority from the ruling NRM party, aims to present a cohesive front to solicit essential services and development for the area.
“This time, we don’t want words, rather we want words backed by action. We need to see construction start so that our sons and daughters can get good education from here,” commented one MP, reflecting the desire for tangible progress. The finalized agenda will serve as the foundation for their engagements with the government, seeking to overcome developmental hurdles in the Bunyoro sub-region.
