Leaders from across the Bukedi sub-region have embarked on a campaign to restore the historical Bukedi Kingdom, presenting it as a crucial initiative for cultural unity and progress. The project, dubbed ‘Obwa’Senkulu Bwa Bukedi,’ seeks to establish a collaborative framework that respects existing cultural institutions while fostering regional cooperation.
This revitalization effort was formally launched during a consultative meeting in Tororo District. The gathering included prominent cultural prime ministers, traditional leaders, district chairpersons, local government officials, religious figures, and members of the Bukedi Kingdom Steering Committee.
Dr. Kedi Steven Zuluba, speaking on behalf of the acting Prime Minister, emphasized that the restoration is not intended to undermine or replace current cultural structures. Instead, it aims to create an “umbrella framework” for enhanced cooperation. “We are here to explore how our people can benefit more by working together,” Dr. Zuluba stated, highlighting the principle of “unity without uniformity.”
The proposed kingdom intends to unite the diverse ethnic groups within the historical Bukedi region, including the Bagwere, Banyole, Japadhola, and Basamia/Bugwe, among others. Each community would maintain its distinct language, customs, traditions, and leadership while participating in a collective platform.
Proponents believe this unified cultural front will strengthen advocacy for essential services like infrastructure, healthcare, and education, alongside promoting youth employment, investment, and cultural preservation. It is also envisioned to enhance the region’s engagement with the government and development partners, thereby promoting peace and economic transformation.
The steering committee noted that consultations will continue throughout the sub-region to build broader consensus before proceeding with subsequent phases of the restoration process.
