Mufti Advises Muslims to Prioritize Saving for Hajj

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has issued a strong call for Muslims to begin saving early for the Hajj pilgrimage. He stressed that Hajj, being the fifth pillar of Islam, requires diligent financial planning rather than being an afterthought once surplus funds are available.

Mubaje made these remarks at a thanksgiving ceremony for Haji Issa Wanderema, a representative of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) for Bududa Muslim District, who had recently completed his Hajj. The event took place in Manafwa District.

During the address to hundreds of attendees, the Mufti encouraged those with the financial capacity to make Hajj a priority. He advocated for consistent saving and a firm intention to fulfill this essential religious obligation, stating that with clear intent and commitment, performing Hajj is achievable.

The Mufti also expressed concern over alleged corruption linked to the Presidential Hajj Offer, suggesting that the widespread desire for free sponsorships fuels this issue. He indicated plans to discuss these concerns, including alleged involvement from individuals at State House, directly with President Yoweri Museveni.

In an effort to tackle these irregularities, the UMSC is collaborating with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to restore confidence in the program. Mubaje also commended Sheikh Ali Juma Shiwuyo, UMSC Secretary for Hajj and Umrah, for his effective management of this year’s pilgrimage, noting a lack of complaints from travelers.

Furthermore, Sheikh Mubaje cautioned Muslims against neglecting Hajj in favor of Umrah, asserting that those financially able to perform Umrah should also strive to fulfill the Hajj obligation. He suggested that individuals unable to perform Hajj during their lifetime should consider including it in their final wishes.

Sheikh Ali Juma Shiwuyo, encouraging immediate action, advised intending pilgrims to utilize the UMSC’s installment payment plan and to settle their Hajj fees by November. This timing, he explained, would alleviate financial strain and aid in comprehensive planning. Shiwuyo also acknowledged Haji Issa Wanderema’s dedication, noting he saved for two years before undertaking the pilgrimage. Returning pilgrims shared positive feedback regarding the UMSC’s transparent financial practices during the Hajj.
