NUP Defends Supporters Pleading Guilty Amidst Bail Denials

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has stated that its supporters pleading guilty to charges while on remand are doing so due to prolonged detention and repeated bail rejections, rather than an admission of guilt. The National Unity Platform (NUP) has come to the defense of its members who have entered guilty pleas or plea bargain arrangements while awaiting trial. The party asserts that these decisions are not an admission of guilt but a pragmatic response to lengthy detentions and consistent denials of bail.

NUP highlighted that such actions are driven by the “restrictive approach” to granting bail, referencing recent remarks by President Yoweri Museveni who urged caution when releasing opposition figures. The President has previously voiced concerns over opposition suspects potentially interfering with witnesses, advocating for public safety and investigation integrity to take precedence.

For many detainees, the party argues, pleading guilty has become the quickest route to freedom after years spent in custody without trial and with little hope of bail. NUP clarifies that while it does not encourage self-incrimination, it will not condemn supporters who opt for plea bargains or guilty pleas through legal channels to secure their release.

The party emphasized that the conduct of these supporters upon regaining freedom is what truly matters. NUP also lauded those who maintain their innocence despite remaining incarcerated, calling them “true heroes” deserving of recognition and support.

This statement follows a trend where courts have increasingly denied bail to opposition figures facing serious charges, a situation NUP claims affects over 150 of its supporters facing what it describes as “politically motivated and fabricated charges.” Some individuals, arrested around the 2021 general elections and subsequent periods, have accepted plea bargains, received reduced sentences, and later secured presidential pardons.

Conversely, others who maintain their innocence continue to be held on remand, with their cases progressing slowly through the judicial system. This development comes shortly after former Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi was granted bail after being on remand since January, facing terrorism-related charges following an incident in his constituency.
