Museveni Engages Ramaphosa on Xenophobia Following Ugandan Repatriation

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is actively engaged in high-level discussions with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, concerning the recent surge of xenophobic violence that has impacted foreign nationals, including Ugandans.
This diplomatic effort was revealed by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during an address to 1,030 Ugandans who have voluntarily returned from South Africa in the wake of the attacks. These repatriated citizens are currently undergoing patriotism and civic orientation at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi.
Prime Minister Nabbanja emphasized that Uganda would not retaliate against South Africans, despite the hostility faced by its citizens. Instead, President Museveni is personally appealing to President Ramaphosa to ensure that South African authorities take decisive action to halt the harassment and violence against foreigners.
“We cannot retaliate against South Africans because that is not who we are. Instead, President Museveni is engaging President Ramaphosa to ensure such acts come to an end,” Nabbanja stated.
She further explained that the Ugandan government felt compelled to act due to the suffering of its citizens abroad, leading to the organization of their voluntary repatriation. The government “could not sit back and watch Ugandans continue to suffer,” she added.
The returnees have been urged by Nabbanja to utilize this opportunity to rebuild their lives by participating in government wealth creation initiatives, such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga, to enhance household incomes and contribute to national development.
The patriotism training is a key component of the government’s reintegration program, designed to instill civic values and provide practical guidance before the returnees are reabsorbed into their communities. So far, over a thousand Ugandans have been repatriated following the latest wave of xenophobic violence, an exercise conducted voluntarily to safeguard the welfare of affected citizens.
