Meta Halts AI Image Feature Amidst Privacy Backlash

Meta has abruptly pulled a newly launched artificial intelligence (AI) image generation feature after it faced significant backlash from users and privacy advocates. The tool, introduced as part of the Muse Image service, enabled users of Meta’s AI chatbot to create or modify images by referencing content from public Instagram accounts.

The feature, which was rolled out on Tuesday, defaulted to opting in users with public profiles, meaning their content could be used to generate AI imagery without their explicit consent.

This sparked immediate concerns about privacy and the potential misuse of personal likeness. The company acknowledged it “missed the mark” and stated the feature was “no longer available.”

Muse Image represented Meta’s initial step into AI image creation, and its default opt-in setting drew criticism for potentially exploiting user data and images.

Groups like the Hollywood union SAG-AFTRA hailed the quick reversal as a “win,” urging users to protect their likeness and highlighting the “obvious dangers and harms” of such technology. Privacy International also voiced criticism, calling it another instance of AI companies viewing personal data as “raw material to be exploited.”

Meta stated its intention was to offer a “useful creative tool” while giving users control, adding, “We’ve heard the feedback.”

Despite this feature’s swift removal, Meta had indicated plans for further AI integrations across its platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger, and is also developing an AI video tool.
