Economic Transformation Essential for Africa's Defence, Museveni States

President Yoweri Museveni has asserted that for Africa to effectively defend itself, a fundamental socio-economic transformation is necessary. Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the National Defence College–Uganda (NDC-U), he stressed that economic development, universal education, and political integration are the cornerstones of continental security.

Museveni urged Ugandans to transition from subsistence farming to engaging in commercial agriculture, manufacturing, artisanship, the service sector, and ICT. He argued that these sectors are vital for wealth creation and national development, stating that subsistence agriculture alone cannot guarantee prosperity or security.

Furthermore, the President highlighted the need for modernized defence capabilities to counter contemporary warfare. He noted that modern conflicts require advanced weapons systems capable of land, air, sea, and space dominance, akin to those developed by global powers.

The graduation ceremony saw 21 participants complete the National Security and Strategic Studies Course, including military officers and one civilian. The Minister of State for Defence, Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, lauded the course for producing strategic thinkers capable of enhancing national security and thanked President Museveni for his commitment to modernizing the Defence Forces.

Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, called upon the graduates to leverage their enhanced strategic thinking for national service, while the Commandant of NDC-U, Brig Gen Alex Olupot, praised the prioritization of professional military education to navigate complex security environments.

The National Security and Strategic Studies Course aims to strengthen strategic decision-making, diplomacy, and leadership. Brig Gen Freddy Joseph Onata was recognized as the best overall student.
