UMSC and Muslim MPs Unite for Community Development

A significant meeting between the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) leadership and Muslim Members of Parliament has paved the way for enhanced cooperation.
The UMSC and the Muslim Parliamentary Caucus have pledged to work together more closely, focusing on crucial areas such as legislation, economic empowerment, and programs designed to improve the general welfare of Muslims throughout Uganda.
This commitment was solidified during the inaugural engagement between the two groups, which saw 29 Muslim legislators from the current Parliament in attendance, with an additional 15 sending their apologies. The meeting was attended by prominent figures including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Third Deputy Prime Minister Lukia Nakadama, and Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Minsa Kabanda.
Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda, described the meeting as the inception of a vital strategic partnership aimed at championing the interests and development of the Muslim community.
Sheikh Mubaje also expressed gratitude for the consistent support from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni towards the Muslim community during his remarks. He further requested a one-week induction retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi for UMSC leaders to deepen their understanding of Uganda’s socio-economic transformation agenda.
Vice President Alupo lauded the UMSC’s role in promoting religious moderation, tolerance, and responsible citizenship, particularly among the youth. She encouraged Muslim MPs to collaborate with the UMSC on legislative priorities benefiting the wider Muslim population.
Highlighting global economic possibilities, Alupo pointed to the burgeoning halal industry as a significant opportunity for Uganda to increase production and exports to Muslim-majority nations. She emphasized the importance of building strong institutions and fostering partnerships for a peaceful and prosperous Uganda.
