The Ugandan government is set to meticulously verify and facilitate compensation for the families of soldiers who lost their lives during peacekeeping operations in Somalia. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja made this pledge in Parliament while addressing concerns about outstanding payments and compensation delays for troops serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
During Prime Minister’s Question Time on Thursday, Kilak South County MP Hon. Gilbert Olanya highlighted the plight of soldiers, noting that some return home without full payment, while others perish in the line of duty. He urged the government to outline its plan for settling these arrears and compensating the bereaved families.
Prime Minister Nabbanja confirmed that the government has been in dialogue with the African Union and international partners to resolve the issue of delayed troop payments. She reported that these engagements have been productive, leading to support for Uganda in clearing the long-standing financial obligations to its soldiers. “I am happy to report that African Union and our partners have since supported the government of Uganda to pay our people,” she stated.
To ensure fair and accurate compensation, particularly for those who lost their lives, the Prime Minister requested Parliament to furnish the government with specific details, including the names of affected soldiers and especially those who died in active service. This information is crucial for the proper processing of compensation claims.
The Prime Minister also touched upon other urgent national issues, including preparations for emergency interventions to combat a looming famine in the Greater North region and address water shortages affecting cattle corridors. The government is actively assessing the severity of the drought in areas like Karamoja and developing strategies, including promoting fast-maturing crops and deploying water bowsers to support affected communities and livestock. These efforts involve collaboration between relevant ministries and local governments to mitigate the impacts of climate change on food security and livelihoods. The government is committed to addressing the needs of its citizens during these challenging times.
This assurance of compensation for fallen soldiers was reported by the Parliament of Uganda.
