Uganda receives 18 Land Cruisers to bolster Ebola fight in DRC

A crucial logistical upgrade has arrived in Uganda with the touchdown of 18 brand-new Toyota Land Cruisers at Entebbe International Airport. These vehicles are earmarked for deployment in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to bolster the ongoing response to the Ebola outbreak.

The specialized 4x4 vehicles were flown in on a chartered cargo plane and will soon make their way overland to the affected DRC regions. This significant delivery increases the total fleet dedicated to the humanitarian effort to 20, following the arrival of two similar vehicles a few weeks prior.

Funded by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the new fleet will be instrumental in supporting a range of critical activities. These include the transportation of patients, facilitating the movement of medical teams and volunteers, delivering essential supplies, and ensuring safe and dignified burials for victims of the virus.

Irene Nakasiita, Director of Communications at the Uganda Red Cross Society, welcomed the donation, emphasizing its role in reinforcing response efforts both along the Uganda-DRC border and within Congolese communities. The vehicles are expected to enter the DRC via the Ntoroko border post, improving the mobility of frontline responders.

Nathan Kimani, IFRC Regional Fleet Representative for Africa, noted that Entebbe was chosen for its logistical advantages. He also highlighted that five of the Land Cruisers have been specifically modified for the safe transfer of deceased individuals, a critical aspect of preventing further transmission.

This timely arrival comes as the DRC grapples with a complex Ebola outbreak, particularly in Ituri Province, where insecurity and limited infrastructure pose additional challenges. The enhanced mobility provided by these vehicles is expected to improve the speed and effectiveness of emergency operations, ultimately aiding in the containment of the virus.

While Uganda has no new confirmed cases, it remains vigilant due to its shared border, strengthening surveillance and preparedness measures. Humanitarian organizations like the Red Cross are central to these efforts, providing essential community support and logistical assistance.
