Uganda Parliament Speaker Convenes Leaders to Chart East African Federation's Future

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth Oboth recently brought together a distinguished group of former government officials and current leaders at Parliament to engage in critical discussions about the future of East African integration.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of East African Community Week, focused on strengthening unity and exploring the pathway towards an East African Federation.

Among the notable attendees were Prime Minister Emeritus Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Kabale University Chancellor Mathew Rukikaire, and former Minister for Security Chris Rwakasisi. Minister for Internal Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, and members of the Parliamentary East African Community Forum also participated.

Speaker Oboth emphasized that the deliberations centered on the profound historical and strategic importance of regional unity. “During the discussions, we shared perspectives on the historical and strategic importance of regional unity,” Oboth remarked.

Dr. Rugunda underscored the value of the gathering, stating that it provided a timely reflection on the necessity of deeper integration within the East African Community (EAC). He added, “Together with the Speaker, we shared insights on the historical necessity of the East African Federation and the value of a united East Africa, which aligns with the theme of the EAC Week.”

The EAC Week, running from July 8th to 10th, 2026, is themed “Advancing the East African Community Agenda through Legislative Dialogue.” The event aims to foster discussions among legislators and stakeholders on key issues such as harmonizing laws, expanding regional trade, and accelerating efforts towards political federation within the EAC bloc.

Establishing an East African Federation has been a long-term objective for EAC partner states, with ongoing dialogues focusing on achieving greater political, economic, and social cohesion among member nations.
