Police are meticulously examining a handwritten note discovered following the tragic death of Naish Trevor Mamuz, a Senior Four student at Naalya Senior Secondary School’s Bweyogerere campus. Mamuz was found deceased in a school toilet, and the note, purportedly recovered at the scene, has added layers of complexity to the unfolding investigation.
According to the school’s spokesperson, Dr. John Bossa, the note indicated the student’s decision to end his life, citing a feeling of not being heard by his parents and a sense of being different from his peers. Dr. Bossa mentioned that Mamuz had been unwell recently and had taken time off for treatment before returning to school approximately a week prior to his death.
Despite appearing to reintegrate well into school life, with good academic performance and normal social interactions, his death came as a profound shock to the school community. However, the police are cautioning the public and the media against making definitive judgments at this early stage.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. “The note has been secured and is being examined as part of the investigation,” Owoyesigyire stated. “We want to establish whether he indeed took his own life or not. We do not want people to speculate at this stage. We shall also establish whether the note was written by him or by someone else.”
The family of the deceased has expressed their grief and stated they will await the conclusion of the police inquiry before making any public statements. This incident has brought renewed attention to the increasing number of student deaths reported in educational institutions across the country, highlighting concerns about academic pressures, family expectations, and inadequate access to mental health support for learners.
